Meet Renee Fiolet, Geelong VIC

When Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) candidate Renee Fiolet started researching family violence, she had to make international connections to find up-to-date analysis. Initially Renee found the task daunting but it’s given her confidence to just approach people, even when she fears rejection.

“No matter how little I felt I was in the family violence space, I learnt that researchers from other countries were genuinely interested in hearing from me,” Renee says.

Outside work, the born and bred Geelong girl maximises the opportunities on her regional Victorian doorstep.

“I love that I’m only an hour’s drive from a major city, but live in a quiet place that’s surrounded by land,” she says.

Between living just minutes from the beach, greeting sheep and cows on her morning walk, catching fish, or dining at one of the region’s amazing wineries, Renee considers herself be very lucky. As a busy and devoted working mum, she’s a committed volunteer and passionate about women’s rights.

Within the next five years Renee hopes to have completed her PhD, continue teaching at Deakin University and maintain her research into best practice family violence response.
